LOST PATHFINDERS FOR THE 1st BATTALION, 501st PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENT Aircraft 981 with jumpmaster Lieutenant Charles Faith was shot down by flak in the vicinity of Vught, where General Student and his 1st Parachute Army were headquartered about ten miles from the 101st Airborne Division drop zones. Lieutenant Faith was the only survivor from the plane. His team was to mark DZ A-1 outside of Veghel, close to the bridges that were the 1st Battalion, 501st PIR’s initial objective. Instead, not due to the loss of the pathfinder team but due to heavy flak around Oirscot, the Battalion was dropped three miles northwest of their objective, around Heeswijk Castle close by the Zuid-Willemsvaart, the canal outside of Veghel. The Battalion wounded and injured were gathered and shortly afterwards captured by the Germans. |
