TWO PERSONS DROWN IN SHOAL RIVER

Mrs. Lula Owen and Daughter Drowned When Bridge Collapsed

Early this morning news reached Milligan to the effect that Morrison Bridge on Shoal River had broken down with three teams of horses and wagons on it, and one lady, Mrs. Owen and her small daughter Gladys and horse were drowned.

Sheriff Sutton and Deputy D. F. Smith accompanied by several other parties hastened to the scene. Upon investigation it was found that the family of I. C. Owen with five teams was crossing from Anlaqua (faint unsure of spelling) to the W. (unreadable) place near Laurel Hill and reaching Shoal River last night about 7 o'clock they began crossing over the bridge.

One team had crossed and three others were on the bridge when it gave way and one team had not reached the bridge. The front team on the bridge at the time it gave way was nearing the end of the bridge: the second team was near the end of the span and the third team about the middle of the bridge, the fourth team was just coming on the bridge when the crash came, the second and fourth teams were hurled upon the middle team and all went through the bridge into the river. Eight persons were on the wagons and went into the river with them, all of whom were rescued except Mrs. Owen and daughter Gladys.

Quite a good deal of bedding and other household goods, besides several hundred pounds of meat, 20 or 30 chickens and ten hogs were lost.

The bodies of the drowned had not been recovered up to 3 o'clock.

H. T. Owen, of Garden City, a son of the drowned lady, was responsible for saving all of the parties,

TWO LIVES LOST

BRIDGE FALLS IN

Mrs I.C. Owen, formerly of Alaqua and her little daughter, Gladys were drowned Thursday night in Shoal river where a bridge gave way throwing them into the river.

The family had started to move to Laurel Hill with wagons there being five teams in the party. The route taken was by way of the Nichols bridge a wooden structure some eight or ten years old and reported to have been in a dangerous condition, and when they reached it three of the teams drove on at once and it gave way throwing them into the river. All of the party escaped without serious injury except Mrs. Owens and the little girl about six years old. Mrs. Owen's body was not recovered until Saturday when it was found about a mile and a half below where the accident occurred.

The body of the little girl had not been found up to yesterday and with the high water after the rains it may be some time before it is, with the possibility of it's never being discovered.

One horse was killed and all the hogs and chickens drowned and the furniture is badly damaged.

A large force of volunteer searchers joined in the hunt for the bodies and worked day and night until the body of Mrs. Owen was found and the search is being kept up for that of the little girl.

Mrs. Owen was a sister of Dr. E.P. Webb of Laurel Hill and was a general favorite with all who loved her. The deep sympathy of a host of friends goes out to Mr. Owen in this terrible affliction.

His mother begged him to stay so he sold out in FL and moved back. He worked the Tyler place from 1920 till 1923. In 1923 he moved to Screven, GA (Wayne County) looking for a turpentine still to buy. He couldn't find one and ended up working for Loss Morgan planting tobacco. In 1929 he moved to Lurray, SC (Hampton County) to work the Gifford plantation as a tobacco planter. He was shot 7 times by I.S. Dial over a dispute about labor, while cleaning up the house he was to move his family. Son Galbert had married Loss Morgan's niece Irene and was still in GA. From Newspaper Hampton County, SC:

R.E. GRAINGER DEAD I.S. DIAL WOUNDED

Result of Dispute Between Men near Gifford Monday Morning.

R.E. Grainger is dead, I.S. Dial is in the EsDorn hospital suffering from pistol wounds in the face and T.H. Weatherly is under arrest, as the result of an altercation which took place Monday morning about 10:30 o'clock at the Gifford plantation about a mile and a half from Gifford.

A coroner's jury, empaneled by P.R. Youmans of Luray, brought in a verdict to the effect that Grainger came to his death from pistol wounds at the hands of either Dial or Weatherly. However, Dr. Johnston Peoples, who, with Weatherly, accompanied Dial to the Walterboro hospital, told a newspaper reporter that Dial told him that he had shot Grainger and that a Grainger had shot him. Weatherly, it is said was driving the car and did not shoot at all.

It is understood that the trouble began this morning about 7 o'clock over some labor at Grainger's home. Later, while Grainger was cleaning up around the Gifford home, where he had planned to move his family shortly, the other two men appeared. The only eye witness to the shooting, a Negress by the name of Rosina Gardner, testified that the men inquired for Grainger and that Grainger himself appeared. The shooting followed immediately afterward and she was unable to say who shot. Grainger was said to have been shot seven times and to have lived only a few minutes. Dial was taken immediately to the hospital.

Both of the men are married and have large families, Grainger being about 50 years old and Dial about 45. Grainger was employed as a tobacco planter for Rhodes Brothers of Estill. Dial was a woods rider. Weatherly, it is understood, operated the commissary at the Dial turpentine still.

Dial is expected to recover unless complications set in.
