Arthur Grainger appears in The Horry County Districts 1850 Census (copy found in the Mormon library, Tampa, FL) listed as A. J. He is listed as 34 years old and his wife Hannah is listed as 33 years old. At that time children listed were George age 6, Mary age 5, Alfred age 3, and Daniel age 9 months. They had real estate valued at $400.00. A. J. as he was listed was a farmer.
A. J. Grainger served as a private in Co D., 3rd SC State Troops, CSA, for 6 months.
Zula Grainger Whitaker, Vick stated in a phone conversation in 1992 that Arthur had been buried under a cedar tree where he had a deer tree stand, about 2 miles from Zoan Church, in Horry County, and she had been there with her father Ralph Emerson. Zula also recited the names of all the children, which were George Morrow (Doris Grainger's great grandfather), Alfred (who possibly lived in FL), Neal, Henry (who had seizures and drowned), Caroline, Daniel and Harmon D.(who was a preacher and was shot in the back while he was plowing his field). Hannah is buried in Zoan church cemetery. George Morrow and Herman D. married sisters - Hellon (not Helen) and Sarah. As of 2002 most of this information is accurate. In the 1870 census Caroline Rogers age 23 is listed in the home of Arthur's son George Morrow.
In the 1880 US census Arthur is listed as 67 years old farmer, born in NC. Father and Mother also born NC. Wife Hannah listed as 64 years old, born in SC. Mother born in NC, and Father born SC. Children in the home were Martha, single 18 years old, Cornelius age 18, and Henry age 18 ( twins)?
In the 1880 Agricultural survey Arthur was listed as farm owner: 15 tilled acres, 275 acres of woodland and forest, value of farm including fences and buildings $300,120 head of livestock, 2 working oxen, 2 milk cows, 15 swine, 8 fowl, 288 lbs of rice produced, 4 acres of indian corn with 30 bushels yield, 2 acres of cowpeas, 1 acre of sweet potatoes with 150 bushels yield.

Notes for ELISABETH HELLON ROGERS: Helon had dark brown eyes, black hair and dark skin. She had 12 children. In the 1900 census she was listed as a midwife. When her son Luther Evan was killed in France and his body was brought home, she insisted the accompanying officers open the casket. He had been shot in the head.
My mother Mary Helen Johnson Grainger Aspinwall stated the her father's brother (don't know which one) witnessed him getting shot.

Notes for HARMON D. GRAINGER: Mr. William Wright Grainger better known in his community, as Morse Grainger, while in the field at work with Kelly Hodges on February 1st 1905, fell dead at the age of thirty-six years. He leaves a wife, three children, father, mother, three brothers, five sisters and many loving friends to mourn their loss. His funeral was preached at Antioch church by the Rev. H. D. Grainger, where his body was buried by loving friends. May God to His goodness bless those who are lo trouble.
Harmon D. Grainger was shot in the back while plowing his field, allegedly for housing some Blacks that were working for him. A Commander Johnson who was living with a neighboring widow, Charlotte Simmons, was accused, tried and hung for the murder. Later another man confessed to the murder for which Johnson died. An account of this is found in the book Horry County, South Carolina 1730-1993 by Catherine H. Lewis, published by the University South Carolina Press 1998.
Harmon and brother George Morrow married sisters Helon and Sarah Rodgers.
