He is listed as 34 years old and his wife Hannah is listed as 33 years old. At that time children listed were George age 6, Mary age 5, Alfred age 3, and Daniel age 9 months. They had real estate valued at $400.00. A. J. as he was listed was a farmer.
A. J. Grainger served as a private in Co D., 3rd SC State Troops, CSA, for 6 months.
Zula Grainger Whitaker, Vick stated in a phone conversation in 1992 that Arthur had been buried under a cedar tree where he had a deer tree stand, about 2 miles from Zoan Church, in Horry County, and she had been there with her father Ralph Emerson. Zula also recited the names of all the children, which were George Morrow (Doris Grainger's great grandfather), Alfred (who possibly lived in FL), Neal, Henry (who had seizures and drowned), Caroline, Daniel and Harmon D.(who was a preacher and was shot in the back while he was plowing his field). Hannah is buried in Zoan church cemetery. George Morrow and Herman D. married sisters - Hellon (not Helen) and Sarah. As of 2002 most of this information is accurate. In the 1870 census Caroline Rogers age 23 is listed in the home of Arthur's son George Morrow.
In the 1880 US census Arthur is listed as 67 years old farmer, born in NC. Father and Mother also born NC. Wife Hannah listed as 64 years old, born in SC. Mother born in NC, and Father born SC. Children in the home were Martha, single 18 years old, Cornelius age 18, and Henry age 18 ( twins)?
In the 1880 Agricultural survey Arthur was listed as farm owner: 15 tilled acres, 275 acres of woodland and forest, value of farm including fences and buildings $300,120 head of livestock, 2 working oxen, 2 milk cows, 15 swine, 8 fowl, 288 lbs of rice produced, 4 acres of indian corn with 30 bushels yield, 2 acres of cowpeas, 1 acre of sweet potatoes with 150 bushels yield.

Notes for ELISABETH HELLON ROGERS: Helon had dark brown eyes, black hair and dark skin. She had 12 children. In the 1900 census she was listed as a midwife. When her son Luther Evan was killed in France and his body was brought home, she insisted the accompanying officers open the casket. He had been shot in the head.
My mother Mary Helen Johnson Grainger Aspinwall stated the her father's brother (don't know which one) witnessed him getting shot.

Notes for HARMON D. GRAINGER: Mr. William Wright Grainger better known in his community, as Morse Grainger, while in the field at work with Kelly Hodges on February 1st 1905, fell dead at the age of thirty-six years. He leaves a wife, three children, father, mother, three brothers, five sisters and many loving friends to mourn their loss. His funeral was preached at Antioch church by the Rev. H. D. Grainger, where his body was buried by loving friends. May God to His goodness bless those who are lo trouble.
Harmon D. Grainger was shot in the back while plowing his field, allegedly for housing some Blacks that were working for him. A Commander Johnson who was living with a neighboring widow, Charlotte Simmons, was accused, tried and hung for the murder. Later another man confessed to the murder for which Johnson died. An account of this is found in the book Horry County, South Carolina 1730-1993 by Catherine H. Lewis, published by the University South Carolina Press 1998.
Harmon and brother George Morrow married sisters Helon and Sarah Rodgers.

Notes for RALPH EMERSON GRAINGER: Ralph went to Holmes County FL in early 1900 because his brother Rubin was there and told him he could make a good deal of money in the turpentine industry. He met Alice Arnette Owen at a candy pull party .They were married April 30, 1905. They lived in a log house for a while, and Galbert and Zula were born there. He bought an old school house and Dallas Wagner (Jack) was born there. He returned to SC when his youngest brother, Luther Evan was killed in WWI. His mother begged him to stay so he sold out in FL and moved back. He worked the Tyler place from 1920 till 1923. In 1923 he moved to Screven, GA (Wayne County) looking for a turpentine still to buy. He couldn't find one and ended up working for Loss Morgan planting tobacco. In 1929 he moved to Lurray, SC (Hampton County) to work the Gifford plantation as a tobacco planter. He was shot 7 times by I.S. Dial over a dispute about labor, while cleaning up the house he was to move his family. Son Galbert had married Loss Morgan's niece Irene and was still in GA. Zula married John Whitaker of Screven and mother Alice lived with them till she died in 1946. Dallas Wagner went back to Horry County SC and married his 1st cousin Mary Helen Johnson. Ralph adopted 2 of his brothers children and raised them. George Steven and Florence Helen. George died in Screven, GA and is buried at Rich Church. Helen died in Lorus, SC in 1992. Helen was married to Ernest Fowler.
From Newspaper Hampton County, SC: R.E. GRAINGER DEAD I.S. DIAL WOUNDED Result of Dispute Between Men near Gifford Monday Morning. R.E. Grainger is dead, I.S. Dial is in the EsDorn hospital suffering from pistol wounds in the face and T.H. Weatherly is under arrest, as the result of an altercation which took place Monday morning about 10:30 o'clock at the Gifford plantation about a mile and a half from Gifford. A coroner's jury, empaneled by P.R. Youmans of Luray, brought in a verdict to the effect that Grainger came to his death from pistol wounds at the hands of either Dial or Weatherly. However, Dr. Johnston Peoples, who, with Weatherly, accompanied Dial to the Walterboro hospital, told a newspaper reporter that Dial told him that he had shot Grainger and that a Grainger had shot him. Weatherly, it is said was driving the car and did not shoot at all. It is understood that the trouble began this morning about 7 o'clock over some labor at Grainger's home. Later, while Grainger was cleaning up around the Gifford home, where he had planned to move his family shortly, the other two men appeared. The only eye witness to the shooting, a Negress by the name of Rosina Gardner, testified that the men inquired for Grainger and that Grainger himself appeared. The shooting followed immediately afterward and she was unable to say who shot. Grainger was said to have been shot seven times and to have lived only a few minutes. Dial was taken immediately to the hospital. Both of the men are married and have large families, Grainger being about 50 years old and Dial about 45. Grainger was employed as a tobacco planter for Rhodes Brothers of Estill. Dial was a woods rider. Weatherly, it is understood, operated the commissary at the Dial turpentine still. Dial is expected to recover unless complications set in.

Notes for PALMER WAGNER ASPINWALL: Palmer attended Omar public out from Screven after he attended business school in Douglas, GA. He drove a dry cleaning truck in Jacksonville, Fl. He ran a filling station for Gulf Oil in St Petersburg, FL, he also was a traveling salesman for the Gulf Oil Co. He was too young for WW1 and too old for WW11. At some point he was a carpenter at Camp Stewart. He returned to Screven, GA in 1944 or 45. He established Aspinwall Cabinet shop about 1945. The first things he built were wooden ironing boards and then on to doors, windows, cabinets, truck bodies and an occasional cypress fishing boat, rocking chair and bedroom furniture. When he married Mary Grainger in 1945 just after WW11, they rented a tiny log cabin on the east side of the railroad track. In about 49 they bought the old Purdom place just north of the Screven city limits and built a cabinet shop on the main highway into town. The Purdom place consisted of 5 acres and had a barn, smoke house, chicken house, out house and 8 mature pecan trees The house was a 6 room "cracker house on the Odum road It had running water in the kitchen, electric lights that hung from a cord in the ceiling, the only heat was a fireplace. In 1963 they built a home next to the shop on the main road. When Palmer retired he sold the shop to Jim Prince, Patricia Aspinwalls husband. Jim sold to Darryl Wasdin and Darryl sold to Derby waters. When Mary passed away in 2004 the house and remaing land was sold to Derby Waters.
